Manchester United Manager was satisfied with his teams third league win of the season as they handed Watford their first league defeat of the season thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling. 

He said: I am happy with the points. I am very happy with the spirit. I am very happy with something that represented the spirit of the team for me was Lukaku making a sliding tackle after sprinted 50 metres running back to help the team.   But I feel a bit frustrated because we had everything in the first half of the game to kill the game. If we played the second half the way we did in the first half, in this moment it would be a different result at the end. In the last ten minutes we went down in intensity. We stopped being aggressive with or without the ball.  We gave them a chance to score a goal.”

On Smalling’s goal he said: “We tried it in training. The best thing that can happen to a coach is when you train and you see it happen in the match. There have been things we have been working on in training. That happened even in the game against Tottenham but the set pieces are crucial. Sometimes you work you work you work and sometimes weeks and weeks and weeks you don’t see the result of that work. So when it happen it was happiness for the coaching staff.

Mourinho was asked what would happen with Ashley Young when Luke Shaw returns and he said: “ Luke Shaw plays on Wednesday. You cannot do it with one left back. Ashley Young is not just a left back. He is also a right back.  They are both doing well. They both understand that one is a young player and one is an experienced one and it is good for us to have these two options plus Darmien who is my emergency man. He is always ready for everything.

De Gea’s and to make a crucial save right at the death and the United Boss said:” Only one save but a fantastic save in the last minute. We know what is a goalkeeper from a big team. In some matches you don’t touch the ball. But in the right moment you have to be there. Good for him and good for us.

Marouane Fellaini was brought in to steady the shaky defence and Mourinho said, “ We made defensive mistakes against Brighton and Tottenham. Against Brighton we deserved to lost but not against Tottenham. We conceded six goals and we were going to Burnley and Watford. I felt my central defenders needed a bit of stability and help. They needed somebody to support them and give them the first ball, the physicality. Fellaini is giving us that he is giving quality and simplicity. He is playing simple and I am really happy.

On Smalling he said: “He was good. The only thing I don’t like about him in this moment is his haircut! But I am  nobody to tell him! He and Victor (Lindelof) are playing well but I repeat Mourinho was important for them?”   Watford played two powerful strikers. They can hold the ball and they can run. They are physical and they are clever. But when a central defender can score a goal it is even better!
